November Is Poly Season: Long Beach's Jackrabbits and the Weight of Playoff Football
Long Beach Poly's football program is one of the most storied in California — a public-school powerhouse whose November playoff games at Veterans Memorial Stadium are a civic event unto themselves.

No high school football program in California carries a longer shadow than Long Beach Poly. The Jackrabbits, from the campus on Atlantic Avenue, have been a national name for generations — famous for producing college and professional players at a rate no other public school in the state has matched, and for a green-and-gold following that treats Friday nights as family business.
November is when that tradition gets tested. The regular season gives way to the CIF Southern Section playoffs, single-elimination football where every opponent is a league champion or close to it, and where a season's work can end on one wet field. Poly has played more of these games, across more decades, than almost anyone — and the expectations travel with the roster, whoever is wearing the jerseys this year.
Home playoff games bring the Jackrabbits to Veterans Memorial Stadium, on the Long Beach City College campus near Lakewood Village — a big, old bowl that suits a big occasion. Crowds there are cross-city: Poly families and alumni in green, Lakewood and Bixby Knolls neighbors who come for the football itself, and scouts and fans from across the basin tracking the next wave of talent out of Long Beach.
Poly's place in the city runs deeper than sport. The school's alumni lists thread through Long Beach's civic life, and its athletic pipeline is one of the city's most consistent exports — a reason a Friday night at Veterans Stadium feels less like a school event than a city reunion with a scoreboard.
This November, as always, the Jackrabbits play with the whole history on the sideline. No opponent sees a normal high school team when Poly warms up. They see the name first — and the current Jackrabbits get their chance, under playoff lights, to add their line to it.
