Belmont Shore's Second Street packs restaurants, shops and beach access into a few flat, strollable blocks — with the pier, the bay and Naples canals all within a mile of the coffee line.

Second Street Rules: Belmont Shore Is Long Beach at Walking Pace (Long Beach Aquatic News)

Belmont Shore measures wealth in walkability. The neighborhood at Long Beach's southeast end is organized around Second Street, a compact commercial strip of restaurants, bars, boutiques and everyday services where the errands and the evening out happen on the same sidewalk — and where the beach is not a drive away but a few blocks south, downhill, at the end of nearly every side street.

The geography is the amenity. Alamitos Bay borders the neighborhood on one side, the open ocean beach on the other, and the sand between them is wide, calm-facing and threaded by the beach path that runners and cyclists use as a shoreline freeway. Belmont Pier reaches into the water at the foot of Termino Avenue, a fishing and strolling pier with the bay's islands and the downtown skyline arranged behind it.

Second Street's economy runs on regulars. It is a street of breakfast lines, dog-friendly patios and shops that survive on neighborhood loyalty rather than freeway visibility — a mix that gives Belmont Shore the feel of a small beach town that happens to have a major city attached to it. Parking is the famous friction; locals plan around it the way other neighborhoods plan around weather.

The neighborhood's edges open into greater adventures: Naples, with its canals and bridges, begins immediately east; Bay Shore's calm swimming water and kayak launches sit at the neighborhood's heart; and the Peninsula stretches beyond, one street wide between bay and sea. A visitor can chain all four in a single unhurried day without ever needing the car that brought them.

In November the Shore settles into its locals' season — mild afternoons, quieter sand, Second Street still busy at dinner. It is the neighborhood's best argument for itself: a beach district that never needed the summer crowds to be complete.
